I received a Shouldice Repair from Dr. Reinhorn in February of this year (2025). I'm now on week 7 of my recovery and my only regret is waiting so long to have the surgery. I wanted a non-mesh repair and nearly traveled to Toronto to the Shouldice Clinic before discovering Boston Hernia and receiving a consult with Dr. Reinhorn, who immediately gained my confidence. I had an inguinal hernia repair done by Dr. Reinhorn in late 2024. The process was pre-peritoneal with mesh. The entire process, from initial consultation thru the final stages of healing, was handled superbly. Dr. Reinhorn is truly an outstanding surgeon. After the operation I had only slight pain. Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen were all that was needed. Since the initial healing there has been no pain, numbness, or stiffness at the site of the repair. The scar from the incision was just over 1 inch in length, nearly normal skin color, and completely level with the surrounding skin. It is essentially undetectable. Nothing like this is ever easy or fun but Dr. Reinhorn and all who worked with him made it a very positive experience.I could not possibly give a higher recommendation. I could not be more pleased or impressed with the care I received from Dr. Nora Fullington and Boston Hernia during my recent hernia repair experience. For anyone considering this, here are some thoughts: Pre-Surgery: After a 6+ month appointment wait elsewhere, BH got me in fast. Office was welcoming and staff all super friendly and relaxed. Within 30 seconds of initial meeting with Dr. Fullington, I knew this hernia was finally getting handled and handled well. She’s a total pro. She recommended an “open repair” in a local out-patient facility, bypassing a hospital, general anesthesia and pain meds, which sounded beyond great to me as I didn’t even know such an option existed. She patiently and clearly answered all questions and at my request, arranged a lightning fast surgery date. Surgery: Surgical team started prep within 10 minutes of arrival. Everyone was smiling and awesome. Dr. Nora then appeared personally and ran me through the upcoming procedure and exactly what to expect days and weeks afterward, along with answering last minute questions. She was a perfect combination of warm, attentive, informative and supremely confident. When she finished, I was completely relaxed and optimistic for the procedure and recovery. Her assistant Kortney was also delightfully cheerful. Everyone was so competent, friendly and calm that I dare say this whole morning was almost fun. To my amazement, they even started surgery early!! Post Surgery: Little over 90 minutes later, I was wide awake and ready to go with almost no real discomfort. Their info pack covered every detail necessary for recovery. First few days, I took a good rest combined with light movements. Discomfort was minimal and only required a few days of Tylenol & Advil. Never experienced any major pain, bruising or swelling at any point. Each passing day improved on the last. After few weeks, I was completely functional. After only 4-5 weeks, the incision is barely noticeable and I can’t even remember this happened, unless I think about it. I’m able to work and train hard with no discomfort. Still happily surprised how minimally disruptive this was in every way. Entire procedure played out EXACTLY as she described top to bottom, which was very helpful in managing my expectations at all times. Dr. Fullington clearly puts great personal effort into perfecting her standards of hernia repair care from every angle. As her patient, I really appreciated and respected that. Using technical surgical expertise, communication skills and clockwork-smooth facilities, she and her team delivered a totally effective, pleasant and anxiety-free experience. I sought out Dr Reinhorn because, as far as I can ascertain, he is the only surgeon doing non-mesh tissue repair hernia surgery in the Boston area. I can only judge from my experience, but it seems that he is highly knowledgeable (he has written papers on the subject) and highly skilled. Dr. Reinhorn did a non mesh inguinal hernia repair 9 weeks ago. I am very please with the outcome of this surgery. I intentionally waited to write this review as I wanted to give my hernia repair some time to heal and evaluate the outcome. I took Tylenol for the first three days to manage my discomfort. My level of discomfort greatly improved after the first week. I had a little discomfort in weeks two and three and by week four I had no discomfort. A non mesh repair is more invasive so one should be prepared for the discomfort period to be a little longer. By week six I started biking slowly and by week seven I was back biking at full speed with no discomfort. I needed bilateral inguinal hernia repair, one of which was a revision of one done 15 years ago which failed almost immediately because the general surgeon used a mesh plug. It progressively got worse, so I sought out a hernia specialist and found Dr. Reinhorn. He repaired both hernias at the same time using just local anesthesia. I live a nearly four hour drive from Boston, yet on the drive home, I was awake, alert, talking and eating. I only needed Tylenol and Motrin for about two days. I am very pleased with the outcome. I had Dr Reinhorn perform my inguinal surgery last week. My second with him. The procedure went flawlessly. Hernias are his specialty and he’s excellent at repairing them. My experience with Dr. Reinhorn and his team was exceptional, I highly recommend them! When I found out I had an inguinal hernia my PCP referred me to a general surgeon in the same group practice. I did not get a good vibe and researched the topic. My research led me to Boston Hernia and the team of Dr. Michael Reinhorn and PA Lauren Ott. There were well over 100 5-star testimonial reviews vs. less than 10 mediocre reviews where I had been referred. The fast recovery open procedure that was available as the recommended option intrigued me. I read the reviews and scientific studies, as well as listened to the common-sense videos available on the website. I became convinced that I wanted to entrust myself to a surgical team that does around 500 procedures a year vs. a general surgeon that does far fewer using a laparoscopic approach with general anesthesia. I am writing this review five weeks post-surgery and I have been back to normal activities, including the gym for the past three weeks. The procedure went very well – I was out of the hospital in 3 hours. Tylenol and Motrin was all that I needed for a few days for mild pain. I started walking as recommended and within a week increased to 10,000 steps a day as part of my recovery. Five weeks post-surgery I have no pain and barely a scar from the procedure. If there is any negative aspect to report, it is that Dr. Reinhorn no longer accepts Medicare; however, this was explained in detail when I made my initial appointment. Shouldice Repair In March of last year, I went to Dr. Reinhorn for a Shouldice no-mesh repair of a left inguinal hernia. Not only did he get the job done, but he got it done in style--during the worst pandemic in American history. I returned to him a month ago for a Shouldice repair on my right side, with similar, excellent results.   I am just a little over a month out of my hernia operation with Dr. Reinhorn, and I cannot say enough great things about him, the staff at Boston Hernia, as well as the medical staff and anesthesiologist at Newton Wellesley Hospital where I had my double hernia repaired. Dr. Reinhorn is not only a phenomenal and gifted surgeon, he is also a gentleman and is compassionate and empathetic. He took the time to answer all of my questions and reassured me that everything should be straightforward. I talked to many friends who had hernia operations at other hospitals with other surgeons, and they all warned me that I would need “at least a week off” from work afterwards and that I would be in excruciating pain. I was actually ready to go back to work the next day, but I took it easy for the next few days anyway since I had already planned on taking the time off. I experienced almost no any pain and had no pain reducing either prescribed or OTC medicine at all after the surgery. I was referred to Dr. Fullington by my PCP. I was seen initially in May 2022 to examine a left inguinal hernia. I began having hernia pain in 2023 and had a follow-up visit with Dr. Fullington. She explained the procedure very thoroughly and I was scheduled for surgery in one month. Dr. Fullington met me in the day surgery suite at NWH and explained the process. The NMH staff was very friendly and efficient. I was treated very professionally. The procedure went smoothly and I was not in much pain at all. I needed only over the counter meds for pain for two days and felt very comfortable. I began walking the next day and felt little pain. It has been about six weeks since my surgery. I waited for over three years to address the hernia simply because I dreaded the surgery and read about too many issues resulting from it. As a result my hernia became very large and more painful. Luckily, I researched and discovered Dr. Reinhorn and his hernia practice that specializes in hernia repair. He was reasuring, kind and I felt in very good hands because he is so well qualified. I went through a day surgery at the surgery center. Everyone was respectful and caring. My fears were quickly allayed once I was there and felt in such competent care with the whole team. Dr. Reinhorn explained that day how the surgery would go and what to expect after surgery including any swelling or pain so that I wouldn’t freak out. The first week I only needed Advil/Tylenol for the pain. Dr. Reinhorn and his assistant did a fantastic job, the scar was minimal, and now it is barely noticeable, and after two weeks the swelling went down and I felt almost back to normal. Now I am back working out, weight lifting and running, and my abdomen looks like it did before the hernia. There is only a little tenderness which is slowly getting better. I only wish I had done this procedure three years ago as it would have saved me so much anxiety, pain, and depression. My initial research found their website to be very comprehensive and informative which answered most of my questions. My appointment with Lauren and Dr. Fullington was very thorough but personable and reassuring. My wife and I left feeling comfortable and confident that we had made the right decision. Dr Reinhorn performed the surgery at Newton Wellesley Hospital and everything was first class. All the personnel and medical staff were professional and efficient. There was never any "down time" and the entire process was run like a well-drilled team. I checked in at 7:00am and was out by 12:30pm. Prior to the surgery Dr. Reinhorn came by to speak to me and my wife and explained exactly what he was going to do. He answered all our questions and the bilateral hernia surgery was completed without anything unexpected. There was no grogginess or pain. I was referred to Dr. Fullington by my PCP. I was seen initially in May 2022 to examine a left inguinal hernia. I began having hernia pain in 2023 and had a follow-up visit with Dr. Fullington. She explained the procedure very thoroughly and I was scheduled for surgery in one month. Dr. Fullington met me in the day surgery suite at NWH and explained the process. The NMH staff was very friendly and efficient. I was treated very professionally. The procedure went smoothly and I was not in much pain at all. I needed only over the counter meds for pain for two days and felt very comfortable. I began walking the next day and felt little pain. I resumed my normal activities(running, biking, stretching, lifting weights) in two weeks. Incision is healing nicely and I was totally pleased with the professionalism and skill of Dr. Fullington and her staff. I had a wonderful experience from the day I met Dr. Fullington in her office. She is kind, patient, empathetic and listens to your concerns and needs. I had thoroughly read the website, which helped with our conversation. The website is extremely detailed. I had a very bad experience in my late teens, so I was extra nervous. Dr. Fullington created a plan and my surgery went very well and the recovery was really a breeze. I did this without any pain medication. I had a scar from a c-section and as I noticed myself heal and the bruising go away, I noticed that Dr. Fullington aligned the scar with my c-section, so that I did not have an additional scar. I found this to be so thoughtful. If you need a hernia repair, Dr. Fulington is the doctor to see. I was a little nervous waiting to go into the OR and Dr. Fullington came and talked to me for a bit before we went in. I have no recollection of anything and I am completely healed without pain. The interesting part is I had a lot of pain before the surgery, so once I had the surgery even though I was healing from that, it was still less pain then before I had it.
