Why Boston Hernia?
A hernia is not just a hernia. In the US, over 1 million people will have inguinal hernia or umbilical hernia surgery every year. Unfortunately, between 5-15% of patients will develop pain lasting longer than 3 months after these operations. That’s not acceptable. We have performed and evaluated almost every kind of inguinal and umbilical hernia repair possible in order to provide patients with the best options.
We are hernia specialists. By partnering with our patients to find the best solution to their problem, we avoid complications before they happen. We are not generalists, and in fact we don’t even repair every type of hernia. By focusing on only a few diseases and treating a lot of patients, we can provide the best care to our patients. We perform nearly 1000 inguinal and umbilical hernia operations each year.
With the addition of Dr. Fullington in early 2021, we now also provide a variety of laparoscopic hernia repairs and care for patients with gallbladder disease. Dr. Fullington specializes in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
What we do:
We offer ambulatory inguinal and umbilical hernia surgery that is safe and effective in Derry, New Hampshire or near Boston. We offer many types of hernia repair to fit each patient’s individual needs. We believe fast recovery inguinal hernia surgery is the best way to fix an inguinal hernia in the appropriate candidate. We also offer a laparoscopic approach to inguinal and umbilical hernia. In certain patients, we can offer a non-mesh approach. These surgeries can be done safely in an ambulatory setting like Surgery Center of New Hampshire at Derry for most patients, or in a hospital for patients who have certain underlying medical issues.
We offer the following types of surgeries:
– Fast recovery inguinal hernia repair
– Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair
– Non-mesh inguinal hernia repair (Shouldice repair)
– Work related groin injuries and hernia repairs
– Umbilical hernia repair with and without mesh
– Small incisional hernia repair with mesh
– Laparoscopic umbilical/ventral/incisional hernia repair
– Laparoscopic cholecystectomy
Who we are:
Boston Hernia is a small private practice surgical group focused exclusively on care for patients with hernia and gallbladder disease. Our main office is in Wellesley, MA, and we are affiliated with Newton-Wellesley Hospital which is part of the Mass General Brigham system.
Our satellite office in Derry, New Hampshire was set up primarily for patients who have a primary care provider within Derry Medical Center. We coordinate with the primary care doctors to provide care to patients with inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, and gallbladder disease. We offer surgery when appropriate at the Surgery Center of NH at Derry.
Our practice has two surgeons and two PAs who work collaboratively to care for and meet each patient’s individual needs.
Nora Fullington, MD is an expert in open and laparoscopic hernia repair as well as gallbladder disease. She has performed over 1,000 laparoscopic cholecystectomies for gallbladder issues like gallstones, biliary dyskinesia, and chronic cholecystitis. She has performed over 700 laparoscopic hernia repairs during her 6 years as a general surgeon, and since joining Boston Hernia in early 2021, she has performed over 300 of the fast recovery inguinal hernia repairs as well as over 200 other hernia repairs.
Kortney Hodgson, PA-C is a physician assistant with extensive surgical training, now specializing in inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, and gallbladder disease. She spends extra time with patients before and after surgery to ensure their questions are answered and to help make them feel as comfortable as possible throughout the process.
Lauren Ott, PA-C is a specialist in the care of inguinal and umbilical hernia patients. Through 8 years of experience, she has evaluated several thousand patients and has assisted in well over a thousand hernia repair surgeries. As a physician assistant, she takes the time to meet the patients where they are and help guide them through the journey of getting their hernia repaired.
Michael Reinhorn, MD is a specialist in inguinal and umbilical hernia surgery. He has performed thousands of hernia repairs throughout his 20 years as a surgeon, and has a unique interest and expertise in both mesh and non-mesh repairs of inguinal hernia. Dr. Reinhorn travels to other states and countries to learn the best techniques available.
By collecting and reporting our own results we strive to continuously improve and provide high quality care. We work closely with the Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative to monitor our outcomes and learn from surgeons all over the country.
